Send a Note to the Blue Note, Demanding Justice!

Welcome to the Justice for Jazz Artists “Week of Action” letter-writing/social media campaign! We ask you—and all of our nearly 50,000 Facebook fans—to post on the Blue Note’s Facebook page (Blue Note Jazz Club, NY), send an email or write a letter to Danny and Steve Bensusan, owners of the Blue Note jazz club, telling them that artists playing their clubs deserve fair treatment!

In 2007, jazz clubs and the musicians union joined together to fight to get jazz clubs a waiver of the NY State sales tax on admissions, with the understanding that the clubs would make modest contributions on behalf of musicians to a pension fund. So far, not one jazz club has done so. Justice for Jazz Artists and the musicians’ union Local 802 want to work with the clubs to ensure that jazz artists receive fair treatment. We need your help to convince the jazz clubs that this is an important issue that affects hundreds of musicians annually.

Letter to the Blue Note

Dear Danny and Steve Bensusan,

I urge you to honor the artistry of the jazz musicians who play at your club and meet with them and their union to discuss implementing a fair pay scale, making good on promised pension contributions, protecting recording rights for musicians and addressing other issues of fairness.

By agreeing to meet on these issues, the Blue Note will demonstrate its respect for the musicians who for years have contributed to the prosperity enjoyed by you and all those with a vested interest in the continued success of the Blue Note.

Yours truly,
